Breakthrough Shrines notes
free how-to instructions by aisling d'art ©2004 - 2006
Because this Artfest 2004 workshop was a process-based class steered by those who attended it, I did not prepare handouts ahead of time. Now that the class is concluded, I've posted these notes for your personal use.

Easy antiquities
These are notes from a workshop that I taught the night before the class. Let your gauze creations dry overnight before painting them.
Adding texture with plaster and gauze - Part one, showing what to use & how to prepare it.
Applying plaster gauze to your art shrine - Part two, with step-by-step instructions.
Layering paint and polyurethane for rich depth - Up to three layers is ideal.
Early and later embellishments for mystery and dazzle, ideas for even better results.
Rubbings
For this workshop, I bring castings from actual 17th and 18th century headstones. You can work with surfaces in your area, for similar (and maybe less creepy) effects.
How to do a gravestone rubbing - schoolchildren do this; you can too.
Casting from gravestones and other sculpted surfaces with polymer clay and plastic wrap.
Elegant rubbings with Renaissance Foil - a neat trick with dazzling results.
Using rubbings in your shrines and journals - far more than just gravestones.
